I’m really excited to share this incredible Sucrerie de la Montagne wedding in Quebec. The venue is a sugar shack hidden among the forest near Hudson, Quebec. Mariane and Stephane held their ceremony outdoors in a very non-traditional wedding without any photography stipulations except to capture the energy of the day and how everyone felt. What a dream!
What was most important to you when planning your wedding?
We did not care to have a super traditional wedding, we just wanted to make it feel like the most ”us” day ever. My parents were never married (weddings are less popular in Quebec, where I’m from) so a lot of traditional elements don’t make sense to us. I was also anxious about the attention that comes with a wedding—like having to dance in front of everyone or cut a cake ”for show”. So we decided to make our wedding our own.
We had a bilingual ceremony where I read my vows in French because I speak French to my now-husband, and he read his vows to me in English, because he speaks English to me! I kept my last name because taking his didn’t feel like me. We opted for our favourite Ben and Jerry’s ice cream instead of cake because that’s our favourite dessert! The most important part was to not do anything just because it’s a wedding, we wanted it to feel like OUR wedding.
How did you choose your venue?
We wanted a venue that was sort of in the middle of where both our families are. We have people in Toronto, and people in the south of Quebec. The only criteria were that we wanted to get married outside, ideally in the middle of the forest. We’re both avid hikers and campers, and getting married amongst trees just felt right. We had never been to Rigaud but had seen a friend of a friend get married there and immediately fell in love with the cool-looking arch that they had. We could really see ourselves having a Sucrerie de la Montagne wedding. The venue is mainly used as a sugar shack, and so the dinner options were quite appealing to us. We thought it would be different, and given we were going for a non-traditional wedding thought it was perfect. Plus, who doesn’t love maple syrup-drenched everything for dinner?
